Helen Smith is a solicitor, patient safety researcher and doctoral scholar in Medical Jurisprudence and Bioethics at the University of Manchester, where she has recently submitted her PhD thesis. Her research examines how healthcare systems respond to medical error and explores whether legal, regulatory and quality-assurance mechanisms contribute to, or detract from, the overarching goal of improving patient safety. She has published peer-reviewed research on clinical audit, professional regulation and clinical ethics, and holds a Master's degree in Healthcare Ethics and Law from the University of Manchester. Alongside her academic research, Helen practises as a clinical negligence defence solicitor in Eversheds Sutherland (Ireland) LLP, advising healthcare organisations.
