Steven is head of the Hydrological Forecasting Group at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, the UK’s centre of excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Steven has experience of leading collaborative hydrometeorological projects, in partnership with stakeholders, which deliver new and lasting capability to decision-makers. He is a lead developer of the Grid-to-Grid (G2G) distributed area-wide hydrological forecasting model and supported its implementation across Britain for the Flood Forecasting Centre and Scottish Flood Forecasting Service, marking a step-change in operational capability. This has included developing probabilistic flood forecasting approaches and investigating their application to Rapid Response Catchments that are often ungauged. Steven has also pioneered methods for real-time flood impact and risk forecasting at national, regional and local scales including creation of a bespoke surface water alert system for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Within the Natural Hazards Partnership of UK public bodies, he leads development of the Surface Water Flooding component of the Hazard Impact Model system.
